Introduction to archetypes

what are they are why do we care?

“Archetypes are systems of readiness for action, and at the same time images and emotions” … Carl Jung

The psychologist, Carl Jung, used the concept of archetype in his theory of the human psyche. For Jung, archetypes comprised psychological patterns derived from historical roles in life, such as the Mother, Child, Trickster, and Servant. Along with our individual personal unconscious, which is unique to each of us, Jung asserted, “there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature that is identical in all individuals.” This collective unconscious, he believed, was inherited rather than developed, and was composed mainly of archetypes.

Using archetypes is another way of understanding our unconscious. By recognizing ourselves in a particular archetype and resonating with the behaviours of that archetype, we bring our unconscious to the light increasing our self-awareness and opportunity for healing.

In this workshop we will explore the 12 common archetypes. Through questions, exercises and guided meditation, you will be able to identify with these archetypes gaining a broader perspective of your-self and those whom you share your world with. You will also learn how to use archetypes as a healing tool, and should you wish to explore it further, resources will be provided.
